To Vision Board or Not To Vision Board

That is the question gnawing at me as I sit here, faced with a pile of magazines and an empty board waiting to be filled with my aspirations. Just joking, I use Canva. Lol. Nonetheless, I sit staring at the blank page of a new document, torn between hope and disbelief, mainly because I did not achieve everything I set out to achieve this year, despite having a vision board for it.

The blank page feels daunting, yet full of possibilities. With so much uncertainty in the world, I am unsure if a vision board will work as effectively, or I should play it by ear.

Okay, let’s assess.

Pros: There’s a prevalent notion that visualizing your goals can make them more attainable. It’s the power of manifesting. Some say that by creating a vision board, which you have designed nicely using, images, quotes, and affirmations, you’re basically programming your subconscious to focus on those things. When you focus on the things, you achieve the things, so to speak.

On the other hand, I wonder if this promotes unrealistic expectations, leading to a lot of disappointment. For example; you really really want that car by end of the year. You have seen other people visualize it and come true but you don’t know the work and effort they have put behind it. But it worked for them, so it should work for you, right? The universe is conspiring in my favor, right? Simply visualizing goals might create a false sense of accomplishment. In addition, focusing on few specific things that you put on your vision board might make you “blind” to other opportunities.

I have to admit, after looking through my 2023 vision board, I realize I wasn’t being very realistic. Some of my goals lay heavily on whether my audience will follow and subscribe to my content, and I had absolutely no control over that. Then, there are other things I accomplished that were not on my vision board; things that I had not even considered a possibility. But I still kept going back to my vision board, looking and feeling absolutely deflated because I didn’t get the things I wanted, things I thought I was sure I would get.

Part of me still believes in the power of manifesting, and it makes me want to dive into this process and create a visual representation of my 2024 goals and aspirations. Then, there’s the pragmatic side that questions whether this is just a fleeting trend, a temporary enthusiasm that might fade away as the year progresses; another thing that will have me questioning my passions and abilities as I navigate through these uncertain times.

In the end, the decision to create a vision board depends on individual preferences and beliefs. For now, I’ll take a leap of faith and create my vision board, trying as much as possible to make it more realistic with SMART goals. After all, there’s no harm in trying again, right? Maybe there’s some magic hidden within those collages after all.
