My Dear Natural Crown

For years, I tried to shape you into something you were not, believing the world would find you and me more acceptable that way. I hid you under scarves, under hats, And for months and months, I straightened you, plaited you, braided you just so I wouldn’t have to deal with you every day. I thought I needed to change you to be anything else than what I saw in the mirror.

But now, I see you in a new light. I see the curls, the kinks, and the coils that are uniquely mine. Every one of them telling a story… my story; of generations before me, and a celebration of who I am.

The coils hold the history of my people, the struggles they endured, the pride they carried, and the strength that courses through my veins. A legacy of love, passed down through generations, a mark of resilience, grace, and beauty.

As I touch you, as I feel your texture, I know you are not just hair; you are a part of me. In every curl, I find freedom. In every kink, I find defiance. In every bounce, I find joy.

Today, I am letting go of the misconceptions about you, the doubts, and the judgments.

I embrace you with love and vow to care for you, to nurture you, to love you just as you are.

Because in this journey, I have found myself. You are my crown, my pride, and my heritage. I am so proud of you, and I am so proud of me.

Forever yours,
